Unit 6: Hobbies & Activities

Objectives:

  • Get learners describing their favorite pastime with this kids English lesson.
  • Teach ESL/EFL learners how to describe activities, with a particular focus on summer outdoor activities.
  • Teach gerunds which are verbs ending in ‘ing, but acting as nouns. The names of most activities are formed using gerunds.

Lesson Story:

Freddie and his family are at the beach. They swim and watch people surfing and waterskiing. Although Freddie likes to surf, he likes swimming more. Freddie’s Dad likes jet skiing, but Lisa doesn’t. She thinks it is too fast, so she likes building sand castles instead. It’s not very dangerous, but she thinks it’s fun.

Freddie: Yes, I love to swim!

Lisa: It’s one of my favorite hobbies.

Mom: One of my favorite hobbies is water skiing.

Freddie: What is water skiing?

Mom: It’s like snow skiing, but it’s on water.

Lisa: That does sound fun.

Freddie: How do you ski on water, though?

Mom: You hold on to ropes that are tied to a boat. When the boat goes, you go too.

Freddie: It’s so great to be swimming.

Lisa: It is. What is he doing?

Freddie: He is surfing, Lisa.

Lisa: Do you think surfing is fun?

Freddie: It looks fun.

Lisa: That didn’t look like very much fun!

Freddie: No, that looks like it hurt.

Lisa: I don’t think I want to surf.

Freddie: What do you want to do, Lisa?

Lisa: I want to build a sand castle.

Lisa: Will you build a sand castle with me, Freddie?

Freddie: Sure, I would love to. Do you have a bucket?

Lisa: Yes. We need some water in it.

Freddie: I’ll go get some.

Freddie: Let’s make an entire sand town.

Lisa: Okay! That sounds fun.

Mom: You look like you had a lot of fun!

Freddie: We did, Mom. We love the beach.

Lisa: Thanks for taking us, Mom.
